Wellness Examinations & Vaccines

Wellness Examinations

A wellness examination includes a thorough evaluation of all of your pet’s major organ systems. During the wellness visit we will ask you about your pet’s behavior, appetite, exercise habits, and regular activities at home.

This is also the perfect time for us to discuss any routine diagnostic testing that may benefit your pet, or to recommend any vaccinations that may be due. During the wellness examination is a good opportunity to note any changes, such as weight gain or loss or other subtle changes that may not be evident at home. Sometimes information obtained during a wellness examination can help detect early signs of illness and allows us to address health issues before they progress.

Wellness testing has become the standard in veterinary medicine. Screening for the early signs of disease is recommended for almost all dogs and cats but even more so for seniors.

Wellness testing usually involves a blood panel, a fecal examination and perhaps some urine testing. These are all pretty innocuous, non-invasive tests. They cause your pet no pain, other than the small prick of a needle stick.

Continuous wellness testing provides a reference with which to compare later tests. It also becomes possible to watch the trend in your pet’s internal organ functions.

Vaccines

At Sunshine Animal Hospital we follow vaccination guidelines set by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) as well as the American Veterinary Medical AssociationVaccines (AVMA).

Vaccines are an important part of preventative health care for our pets and should start as early as 6-8 weeks old in puppies and kittens.

The following are the core vaccines for dogs:

  • Rabies
  • Distemper
  • Hepatitis
  • Parvovirus

Core Vaccines for cats include:

  • Feline Panleukopenia Virus
  • Feline Herpesvirus Type I
  • Feline Calicivirus
  • Rabies Virus
  • Feline Leukemia for cats that go outside

There are another vaccines that we would discuss with you during the professional examination.

We believe in only giving the necessary vaccines to your pet.
